Margarita; classic & how to twist it

World tequila day is a great reason to revisit a classic, then add a few twists.

Classic Margarita

Shake 3 ingredients on ice and serve in a salt rimmed glass, easy.

Ingredients

  • 40mls good tequila (Jose Cuevo is a good start)
  • 20mls lime juice (fresh)
  • 20mls good triple sec (Cointreau is hard to beat)
  • Ice

Method

Add all ingredients to a shaker and fill with ice. Shake hard until well chilled and slightly diluted. Strain into a half salt rimmed glass; serve straight up in a martini or on the rocks in a…you guessed it, rocks glass. 20140724-162255-58975333.jpg

Golden or Bloody Margarita

Add 30mls of fresh orange or blood orange juice before shaking.

Strawberry margarita: frozen, serves 2

In a blender add the following in this order:

  • 2-3 ripe strawberries
  • 2 large scoops of ice
  • 90mls tequila
  • 30mls triple sec
  • 30mls lemon juice
  • 15mls sugar syrup or to taste

Method

Blend. Note: the consistency of the blend will be right when the liquid is at the same level of the ice before blending. Serve in a margarita glass with a fresh strawberry on the side.  Often made with a sugar rim.

Tommy’s Margarita

Use agave syrup instead of triple sec or sugar.

Note: consuming agave products increases the immune system due to antibacterial properties as well as many other health benefits. So consume your tequila or mezcal in confidence knowing that you are doing something good for your body.
